LONDON VS. THE U.S MEDIA-

(In gerneral not ever concerning fashion week London and the U.S have a very different take on publication styles)

New York and London are parallel cities, neighbors from across the sea, even sharing a language, with a few discrepancies. So what makes two similar cities have such different media coverage and fashion weeks? Their styles…

In general when looking at an American Fashion magazine compared to a London based one you see many differences right off the bat. London draws you in with beautiful editorial pictures while America is all about how many subtitles they can fit on a front cover. London is more risqué while America is more conservative.

Take a look for yoursef!

LONDON VS NEW YORK FASHION WEEK AND COVERAGE-

New York fashion week didn't only report on the clothing but it was all about who was at what show and what model walked for so and so designer. The media went crazy with celebrities and often fashion was put on the back burner. For London the fashion was the star of the show. Models names weren't being dropped left and right. And celebrities were a mere add of interest piece rather then the grand slam that they are in New York.

lets compare the two...

New York is about selling clothing to real people, while London is selling an idea. New York is more conceptual and London is more of a dream world. New York creates must have looks everyone wants to stock their closets with while London creates fantasies everyone wants to fill their heads with. Their media coverage directly links to their fashion shows. New York's coverage is all about who had the most closet staples and editors top picks to rock. While London's is more racy and talks more about the details in the designs more then what was hot and not. To look further into the media coverage you have to directly look at the shows that were being covered.

The shows itself....

New York fashion week is more conservative; it’s a real representation of how people can dress. And that’s how it’s described in the media. Often reading magazines covers with blurs saying things like "Hottest trends this spring." Most of the styles sent down the runway are what people will be shopping for in the following weeks. America is driven by timeless silhouettes and wearable separates that are ready to go straight from the runway into a closet. And the media directly plays off of that letting you know right away what silhouettes were their favorites and what were fashion faux pas. Runways In NY are flooded with commercial pieces. The U.S is full of designers like Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs. In the U.S the fashion media is often trying to sell you the clothing rather then just reporting on it. Magazines often give you tip and tricks on how to wear the clothing. New York’s fashion week is a genuine demonstration of New York’s actual style and the media plays upon that.

While London’s fashion week is more Art driven. You see design sent down the runways that are completely un-wearable. London’s fashion week is more inspiring and daring. Their media outlet is just like their shows. They dare to be more racy and speak through pictures rather then use lots of words; they have the cover picture draw you in rather then a bunch of subtitles. They don't hold back as much as New york does when it comes to both fashion week and media coverage. They send things down the runway that have no intention of being worn on a normal basis but instead to provoke the crowd and let their imagination run wild. Their media coverage is one in the same. They aren’t trying to sell to you but rather inspire you with beautiful imagery; London is less about conforming to trends and more about creating their own signature looks. The media coverage in London congratulates individuality rather then who had the best trends of the season.
