Dear Grace Coddington of American Vogue magazine,

I want to start this letter off with a praise, commending you for your work at American Vogue. No one can envision a photo shoot quit like you. Your work is truly executed in such a flawless fashion. My name is Mackenzie Anderson, and I am a Kent State Senior in the fashion merchandizing program studying here in New York City. I was recently appointed the position of Creative Director for a group project on our school’s magazine, and whom better to reach out to then you, the famous Grace Coddington: Creative Director of American Vogue. This project entails, coming up with a clear outline of how our magazine should be portrayed to the public and who our target audience should be. I will have to do a photo shoot to give some original content for when we present our idea of the magazine to the class. And would love some feedback to some questions I have concerning this role I have taken on.

I’ve always been a very visual person, and consider myself to have a knack for what looks good, but this will be my first time directing photo shoots and working directly with a magazine. With that being said here are a couple questions for you. In your recent work for the September issue you did a spread called “Forces of Fashion” that turned out so effortlessly beautiful. And perfectly depicted everyone who was shot. When working with recognizable clientele, do you have to do additional research on how to portray them? It could be a challenge to shot someone who already has such a stark reputation. Making sure your depiction of them doesn’t clash too much with who they are. What is some advice you could give when working with a famous client, or someone who has such a clear-cut reputation? I’m sure our school magazine won’t be doing any editorials on A-listers like Vogue but when portraying the “celebrities” of our school it would be nice to have a sense of direction to take. A how-to on portraying clients in a beautiful way that doesn’t only represent the magazine but also represents them as well.

As for my second question, your editorials always look so precisely thought out. Your recent shoot for New York Magazine called “The Seven Ages of Women” was absolutely stunning. What are some things you do to prepare you for an upcoming photo shoot? I would love to hear about what inspires you and how you prepare yourself. Your work is sincerely an inspiration to me and I will definitely be looking through the pages of Vogue for creative ideas for this upcoming assignment.

It has been an honor just to write to you and I hope to hear back, thank you so much in advance for the time you took out of your busy schedule to read this

Sincerely an aspiring you,

Mackenzie Anderson
