Their social media accounts are the envy of most girls, but what about the girls we don’t follow on Instagram… how are they? “Picture Me” the documentary exposes the real life of models, showcasing their hardships. Modeling is often looked upon as being this fairytale lifestyle of fun, success, and constant glamour, but many are taken advantage of and get caught up in the industry’s hype and have little support. Many start out as young girls aged only 14 or 15 and are thrown into NYC and expected to fend for themselves. They live in a house with six others that were promised fame, and some only speak little English. After watching “Picture Me” It became a lot more apparent that the modeling industry is a bit of a cruel one.
Modelalliance.org is a non-for-profit labor group for models working in the American fashion industry. They believe models deserve fair treatment in their workplace, and are aiming to establish ethical standards that bring real and lasting change to the industry. They want to spread the word, and shine a light on the ill-treatment this industry endures on young females. Efforts being made to make modeling better are, getting affordable health care, and establish a bill of rights to help protect models, especially those under the age of 18.
