An app to de-clutter your coffee table, and revamp your life but is Texture hype or actually helpful? The question I’ve asked and then answered…
Texture app allows its users through a monthly subscription to gain unlimited access conveniently through their cell-phones or tablets to a wide range of different publications. When introduced to Texture, I had never thought before that this was something I would ever need or be super interested in. I’m more of a casual magazine buyer myself. I buy magazines off of the appeal of them and enjoy flipping through their pages. I never enjoyed reading books online so I shoved magazine into the same category and decided I would never seek an online subscription. However a friend of mine has an online subscription to WWD and the convenience of having a ton of fashion knowledge at your fingertips was appealing and changed my mind about online reading. So lesson learned never say never, and apps are cool, so we should use them!
When first signing up for Texture it was kind of overwhelming but in an amazing way. Whether you’re interested in health or world news, fashion or furniture there is a magazine or rather magazines for you to enjoy. I decided to not decide and basically picked every magazine because well why not? I would never normally go and buy a magazine on women’s health but if it’s a part of this wonderful $9.99 a month deal then yeah, lets throw that into my collection and maybe it will inspire me to walk into a gym.
About after a week of solid use, the original amazement began to wear off and I was then able to properly assess the pros and cons. The top and most obvious pros are convenience and opportunity. Meaning you now have the opportunity to check into magazines you may not have wanted to bother purchasing before and you can check them virtually anywhere (and yes that was a play on words this experience is virtual and incredible.) More pros are: the layout is pretty user friendly, it’s easy to navigate and it’s really taking online publications to another level. All your magazines are in one place, you never have to lug them around ever again. However there is always bad with the good, and some cons that made me realize this isn’t magic were: you can’t read the magazine in landscape, which seems minor but on a tablet it would have been nice to be able to flip it and read. Also your spot of reading isn’t remembered between devices so if you laid down your phone while on page 5 and then decided to pick up your tablet it won’t automatically place you where you left off. The cons are mostly minor and will more then likely be fixed with updated versions of the app. Like most apps there are a few kinks that need to be worked out.
In the end I really liked this app and think it’s an amazing tool to have and use. I began reading about more then just fashion and really enjoyed other magazines such as Vanity Fair and Fitness. Overall I recommend everyone at least try the free trail, and tap into some interests you may have not known you had! I am defiantly going to enjoy the remaining time I have with the free trail and may even look into continuing with the app. Who knows maybe ill just “forget” to cancel after my month is up. And to answer my beginning statement, Texture is not all hype it is indeed helpful.
